Renoir simply loved life in all its fullness. He did not aim at shocking his public, but he wanted to portray the world around him in its festive and cheerful aspects : the luxury of the upper echelons of society and also the humble pleasures of the Parisian middle classes. To him art was something joyful, a feast for the eye. And herein lay both the greatness and the limitations of his art.Contents
