A true story of the relationship between a Christchurch man (Joe Erridge) and a remarkable bird (a rook). Joe Erridge told the author their experiences and lent her his extensive notes. The bird hatched in Joe’s hand and spent the rest of her life with Joe. The bird’s antics are described, and her apparent ability to understand words and behave appropriately. The bird treats Joe as a mate, and as a dear friend. She protects him when she thinks he is in danger, and he helps her build nests.
