Labour Day was first celebrated in 1899 to commemorate the establishment of the eight hour working day and the 48 hour working week which was later reduced to 40 hours. This book looks at the history of the labour movement and working conditions in New Zealand, employment and Employment Contracts, Samuel Parnell, the Knights of Labour, exploitation or ‘sweating’, the maritime Strike of 1890, the Waihi Miners’ Strike of 1912, the Great Strike of 1913, the development of the NZ Labour Party, and the 1951 Waterfront Dispute.
