Making things Count is a picture pack and audiotape designed to develop young children’s understanding of mathematics, particularly numbers. It consists of 12 photos, an audiotape, and a 20-page booklet. Educators can use the pictures to develop children’s mathematical understandings and to promote discussion. Children may be stimulated to try similar activities. The audiotape contains 7 songs, some in Maori and Samoan, to listen to and sing along with. These can be used for finger games and counting activities. The lyrics are provided in the booklet which also includes sections on the curriculum and mathematics with young children, suggestions for activities, and recommended reading.
