Beneath Burning Mountain

Tomlinson, Theresa

Walker, George

Notes
Women flooded out of their houses, hammering for all they were worth on kettles, buckets, pans and drums, screaming and howling at the tops of their voices. “Press-gang! Turn about!” It is a stark existence for the families on Burning Mountain, whose daily business is the creation of alum crystals to fix dyes. Then the violent and merciless press-gangs appear, threatening to disrupt the community forever. For young Ann Langtoft this marks the start of a series of thrilling and shattering experiences.
