By the time I was ten, I was determined to travel to the edges of the earth. One day in 1844, my chance came. My voyage across the great oceans from America to ‘the great fish of Maui’ would change my world forever - and almost cost me my life. A major historic even in New Zealand’s history is told from the viewpoint of a cabin boy who lived at the time. This even is the chopping down of the New Zealand flagpole by Hone Heke, who was the first person to sign the Treaty of Waitangi.
