Dresden, Germany 1945. Elizabeth, Karli and their mother are fleeing the city as the allied bombs begin to fall. Their home destroyed, they must flee the ruined city through the perilous, snow-covered landscape, all the while avoiding the Russian troops who are drawing even closer, to reach the safety of the west - and it would be difficult enough if they didn't have an elephant with them.
