Extraordinary things happen in Woodford when kind and timid pianist, Barney Barrington, and his enemy, Jasper Jellit, both want to buy the same painting. When millionaire, Barney, returned to live in the place that he was born, equally rich millionaire, Jasper, was worried that he would be upstaged. He set out to make life as difficult as possible for Barney - with hilarious and far-reaching consequences. When the very special painting, the Angel, came up for sale, Jasper was sure buying it would reassert his position in the small town. But when he is outbid by Barney, Jasper is determined to get his revenge.
