Based on the true story of Elwyn Welch of Mount Bruce near Masterton. In the 1950s Elwyn hatched a clever plan to help breed takahe, used his bantams to raise takahe chicks. Elwyn’s farm later became the foundation of Pukaha / Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre.
